Custom IR reverbs of our home.

Many times in audio, we use digitally rendered room acoustics, or reverbs. Digital reverbs are great at cleanly creating large spaces such as concert halls and churches, but for the smaller spaces that we often need in commercials, it’s hard to beat Impulse Responses.

In a nutshell, an Impulse Response (IR) is an acoustic sample of a real space. You setup a speaker and a microphone and record a tone sweep of the room. By comparing the original tone with the recorded version, the program can derive the acoustics of the space. Another way to create an IR is by recording a loud impulse in the room. Often a starter pistol will be used, but a good kid-friendly substitution is a large balloon! You set up and record a stereo mic as you pop a balloon and voila, you have an Impulse Response!

More money, more problems?

If you’re fortunate and manage to accumulate a little wealth, you may need some help protecting that nest egg, growing it for the future, and preparing to pass it along to the next generation. That’s the job of Northwestern Mutual.

JennAudio provided sound design and mixing for a series of spots outlining the ways Northwestern Mutual can make sure more money doesn’t lead to more problems!

The sound design on the featured video was wonderfully complex. A solid glass sphere navigates a variety of pitfalls on its journey to protect the family’s assets. Our studio was converted into a giant marble maze to create the sounds scored to picture. Enjoy the video after the jump, or catch it in our Video Library.

The unexpected results of DNA testing.

What if your genome revealed you and other family members carried the gene for a debilitating disease? Where do you go from there?

That’s the topic of this video from Color Genomics, a healthcare company that can rapidly scan DNA for anomalies.

It’s a serious topic, and this animated spot attempts to give you three steps to help your family handle the situation. Sound design was used to convey the various emotions experienced: joy, concern, frustration and anger. JennAudio worked on a series of six videos for the company. A Deep Dive for Scuba Analytics.

Companies with large, constantly changing datasets use Scuba Analytics to process that data and provide insights. JennAudio provided sound design and mix for this beautifully animated commercial that takes place entirely underwater.

Did you know that an underwater microphone is called a hydrophone? We scoured hundreds of these recording and used the best snippets along with effects we recorded ourselves to create this soundscape worthy of Jacques Cousteau!

SXSW 2020: This film we did was meant to open the event…

Obviously, 2020 has been the Worst Year Ever. You may remember that SXSW was canceled and the film portion was moved online to Amazon Prime, for free. Had the show taken place in Austin, the opening event was to feature this video for which we produced the audio. We gotta say, the final mix was outstanding and a teeth-rattling movie theater experience in surround sound… an experience that only a handful of people got to hear.

Enough wallowing in self-pity. The sound design and mix are still kickass – even in stereo!

The Green Light: Paul Lee Documentary

This twelve minute film features Paul Lee, NHRA quarter-mile race car driver. A few years ago, he suffered a “widow-maker” heart attack even though he was in great shape. This is the inspirational story of his battle back to the track.

Produced by Coat of Arms for WebMD, this project was a lot of fun to sound design and mix. It has everything: near-death experience, roaring race cars, and a happy ending!

As a college instructor, Michael has worked with several educational learning systems, added to the list is Google Assignments. As you would expect with a Google product, the integration between all the services is seamless. We produced the audio for this video and it came out quite nice! Give it a listen – even if you’re not an educator!
